Barred Owl
(also called a swamp owl, wood owl, laughing owl, black eye owl, rain owl, striped owl)
  • Medium size grey-brown owl with whitish brown facial disk and very dark brown eyes.
  • Body length 16 to 25 inches; weight 1.5 pounds to a little over 2 pounds; wingspan 38 inches to 50 inches.

  • Live in deep wet forests, wooded swamps, and other woods by waterways. Widespread in North America except in the southwest.
  • Will take a variety of food such as voles, mice, rates, squirrels, small rabbit, bats, moles, birds, small fish, frogs, turtles, large insects, mink, crayfish, etc.
  • Barred Owls will nest in tree cavities and abandoned Red-Shouldered Hawk nests, Cooper's Hawk nests, squirrel and crow nests. Young Barred Owls spend up to 4 months with their parents, quite a bit longer than other owls.
