Eastern Screech Owl
(also called little-eared owl, little horned owl, little gray owl, little red owl)
  • Body length 7 inches to 9 inches; weight 5 ounces to 9 ounces; wingspan 18 inches to 24 inches. Slightly smaller than the Western Screech Owl.
  • Lives in open woods, parks, suburban and city backyards with large trees, riparian woods along streams and woodlands. The Eastern Screech Owls are cavity dwellers.

  • Diet is insects, small rodents, birds, amphibians, bats, earthworms. Will also catch insects on the wing and forage for food walking on the ground.
  • Nests in natural tree cavities, old woodpecker holes and nest boxes. Parents will care for young 5-6 weeks after leaving nest.
