Red-Tail Hawk
(also called "buzzard hawk or hen hawk")
  • Most common hawk in North America.
  • Body length 17 to 24 inches; weight 1-1/2 pounds to 4 pounds; wingspan 3-1/2 feet to 4-1/2 feet.

  • The red tail does not appear until after the 1st year.
  • Lives in forests, edge habitat, prairies, open fields and meadows interspersed with woods or bluffs, deserts, tropical rainforests and mountain forests.
  • Hunts small mammals, birds, insects, amphibians and reptiles.
